In addition to the topics covered previously on this subject, here are the final third and fourth things that you should do to help your difficult dog. You might find a dog harness helpful.

Be Patient

This is not an overnight problem. It takes time and patience to change the behavior patterns of a difficult dog. Expect to commit a great deal of time to correct your dog’s errant behavior. Furthermore, impatience increases the risk of inconsistency in training and the likelihood that you may lose your temper or act inappropriately in handling your dog.

Seek Assistance

Sometimes a dog simply requires professional training assistance. If you have tried to manage the situation unsuccessfully and feel that you are at a dead end, you must consider using a professional dog trainer. Quality professionals have broad experience and may be able to isolate training methods that will be effective for your particular dog. You may plan to consult a professional trainer on a regular basis.

1. Seek out information

What you need is not the small pet store pamphlet. Find more detailed and expertly written information about dog training and specific methods to assist you in training your difficult pet. Canvass the library, bookstores and the internet in pursuit of knowledge and tips that deal with your specific pet problems.

2. Make sure your dog is healthy.

Often an underlying health problem is causing the behavioral problems of your dog. Your dog’s behavioral issues could be sympotmatic of a physical problem. Have a veterinarian thoroughly check out your dog. Too often, medical cuases of poor behavior go overlooked. If a medical issue is underlying his poor behavior, proper treatment can rectify many of his problems and ensure a long healthy life for your dog. For additional ideas, check dog collars and the Information and Articles categories of The Canine and Feline Store.

mv11122.jpgWhen you first bring home a little puppy, you expect that he will brighten your family’s life. He will be a cheerful companion for the whole family.

But sometimes it does not work out that way. You never expected him to destroy  clothing and furniture. You didn’t expect biting. You did not anticipate his aggressive personality. Random barking and wanton disobedience were not part of your plans. The fact is, you own a difficult dog.

Should you give up because you feel you are trapped with a “naughty” dog? Some might even consider the inappropriate route of abandoning the poor animal. Neither “solution” is good for either the dog or his owner. Rather, you must make the commitment to take appropriate steps to deal with a difficult dog. One item that you might procure would be a dog training collar.

If you want your dog to lead a happy life and be a wonderful companion for you and the family, there are several things you need to do. these are described in the 2 ensuing blogs.

luxury dog bed

Like people, some dogs cannot be comfortable on a stack of worn down pillows or a hard, cold floor with sheets.  Canines require the a reasonable amount of sleep and rest like humans, so purchasing a dog bed for your furry little friend would be a great idea; after all, you wouldn’t want to sleep on a cold floor yourself, would you?

There are lots of fun choices in a luxury dog bed.  To some, it may seem a bit far-fetched to buy a dog a luxury bed, but why wouldn’t you do that for your best friend?

dark_brow_golden-pet-residence.jpgWhen housebreaking your dog, you should take your dog out the same door and to the same area each time. Even better,  teach your dog to scratch at this door when he needs to go out. This will make your future cleanups quicker and easier.

Try to take your dog outside to do his business at the same time each day. Like many humans, they feel most comfortable with a routine to follow. Once outside, the words “Hurry up” speed up the process and teach the dog to associate the words “Hurry up” with doing his business. Check out the pet crates at The Canine and Feline Store.

Unless you catch your dog in the act of making a mess, do not scold him. Rubbing your dog’s nose in a puddle of pee after the act does not teach your dog not to pee in the house, but rather serves to confuse him.

If you catch your dog making a mess in the house, grab his collar and say “No!” in a stern voice and then lead him to the ourside area where you a training him to go to the bathroom.  When he does his business, praise him to reinforce the process.

gg-pet-crate.jpgYour dog wants you to be the “leader of the pack”. Your job: Give orders and keep the pack in line. At the head of the list: Housebreak your dog.

The consensus as to the best age to housebreak a puppy is 8 to 12 weeks old. One of the best ways is to use a  crate: Dog Houses/Pet Crates. Puppies like crate training. The confined space in a crate gives your puppy a sense of security and safety.

NEVER use the crate to punish your puppy. It is not a jail, but rather his happy and safe  home. Two hours is about the maximum time to leave the puppy in a crate, except in an emergency.  They won’t make a mess in their sleeping area unless you leave them locked up for too long, which is why the crate makes such a good tool for housebreaking. After removing him from the crate, lead him outside to the area where you want him to do its mess.

Dog Feeding Guidelines

Healthy Dog Food System

  • It is usually preferable to feed one or two meals per day rather than leaving food out all the time. However, some medical conditions require more frequent feeding. Check with your veterinarian about recommendations for your dogs.
  • Feed some canned food, which generally contains more dog protein and less grain than dry foods. Plain dry food does not clean the teeth and is not an essential for either cats or dogs.
  • Supplement all commercial dog foods with other foods, such as organic meats and steamed, pureed or finely grated vegetables (most cannot be very well digested by carnivores raw). Dogs may be supplemented with tofu and cooked grains.
  • Other helpful supplements that are especially important when feeding commercial food include probiotics such as acidophilus, digestive enzymes, and the antioxidant vitamins E (alpha tocopherol) and C (either Ester C, calcium ascorbate, or sodium ascorbate).
  • Consider making at least some of your dog’s food at home. This lets you control the quality of the ingredients. There are many excellent books, articles, and websites available for more detailed guidelines on ingredients, proportions, and preparations. Even one or two home-made meals a week will be a significant improvement over feeding solely commercial dog foods.
